Key Highlights:

  • Over 606,000 students were enrolled in UK Transnational Education (TNE) in 2022-23, marking 8.8% increase.
  • Asia leads in TNE enrolments, with 51.5% students, while the UAE shows the fastest growth outside the top five markets.
  • UK Universities increasingly emphasize partnerships to enhance global higher education accessibility for international students.

UK Transnational Education continues to see robust growth with 606,485 students from 228 countries pursuing higher education in UK Universities in 2022-23. This growth underscores the appeal of affordable, high-quality UK education delivered through online platforms, in-country campuses, or partnerships abroad. Also, in the same period, 758,855 international students were studying onshore at UK institutions which was the highest that year.

But with visa policies becoming stricter, TNE presents a practical, affordable alternative, allowing students to benefit from the prestige of UK education without relocating

Key Regions and Markets

With over 312,295 TNE students which is more than half of all the enrolments, Asia remains the largest market. Europe follows with 110,750 enrolments, while the Middle East and Africa account for 82,930 and 64,790 students, respectively.

Coming to Asia, China continues to be the largest hub for TNE. Sri Lanka has climbed to the second spot with an 18% year-on-year growth, surpassing Malaysia. Outside the top five markets, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has recorded exceptional growth of 20.4%, showcasing the increasing interest to study in UK in the Middle East region.

Shifting Trends Towards Partnerships

Over time TNE delivery methods are evolving. While traditional formats like branch campuses and online learning remain popular, there is a rise in partnerships between UK universities and local institutions of that country. In the 2022/23 academic year, 155,025 students enrolled in TNE programs through partner organizations, up from 138,090 in the previous year. Similarly, collaborative programs attracted 252,405 students, up from 225,675 in 2021/22.

These partnerships between higher education institutions not only benefit students but make education more accessible and also help improve the quality of higher education systems in the host countries.

Benefits of Choosing TNE

For international students, TNE offers several advantages. One of the biggest advantage is that students can earn a globally recognized bachelors or Masters in UK without needing to move abroad, which helps save a lot on living and travel costs.

Top UK universities are part of these programs, ensuring that students receive the same high-quality education as they would on campus. TNE is also a great option for students living in remote regions, offering them the chance to earn prestigious degrees through flexible learning models like online and hybrid formats.

The steady growth in UK Transnational Education enrollments highlights the increasing appeal of global partnerships in delivering quality education. For study abroad recruiters, this presents a significant opportunity to align with the rising demand for accessible and flexible UK education models.

Collaborating with KC Overseas Education allows you to leverage this trend, streamline processes, and provide students with seamless pathways to prestigious UK qualifications, ensuring mutual success in the evolving education landscape.
