Effective from November 8, 2024, Canada has announced the suspension of the Student Direct Stream program alongside the Nigeria Student Express (NSE). This change discontinues a popular fast-track Canada Student Visa route previously available to students from select countries, including India, Pakistan, and the Philippines.
First introduced in 2018, SDS Canada aimed to streamline study permits for students from 14 eligible countries. Students applying under the SDS benefited from faster processing times, often around 20 days, if they fulfilled the necessary requirements—such as proof of financial stability through a GIC worth CA$ 20,635, advance tuition fee payment for 1st year, and strong language scores.
The decision to suspend Student Direct Stream in Canada aligns with the country’s efforts to regulate the increasing demand for immigration and housing resources. The Canadian government has highlighted that the substantial growth in applications has led to pressure on housing, student services, and other infrastructures across the country, especially in regions with high numbers of international students.
International students looking to study in Canada can now submit their applications using the regular study permit route. This route still offers an accessible pathway with GICs recognized as proof of financial stability. Canada’s policies continue to support international education, and with proper planning, students can still take advantage of the country’s robust educational offerings and post-study work opportunities.
As SDS Canada, it is advisable that prospective students apply via the regular study permit process well in advance. Applying late can lead to longer waiting periods so start with the university application process at the earliest for the 2025 intakes.
