Great News for international students studying in Canada and for those aiming to pursue their higher education in this study destination. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the implementation of a 24-hour part-time work rule from Fall 2024.

What is 24-Hour Part-Time Work Rule?

As per this 24-hour part-time work rule international students will be allowed to work 24 hours per week during their study period. While this is the weekly limit during semesters, international students can continue to work unlimited hours during their vacation. This new rule, to be brought into effect from Fall-2024, is no doubt a great initiative for students to manage their cost of education in Canada while gaining work experience.

What was the Part Time Work Rule earlier?

Back in summer, Marc Miller, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) in Canada, had announced a revision of the unlimited number of work hours policy for international students.

This was a temporary policy during the COVID-19 phase and was recently discontinued in April. Post this, the work hour limit was brought down to 20 hours per week for international students during their academic session. The work hour limit was implemented after analyzing the results of a study conducted in the US and Canada. It showed a drastic decline in the academic performance of students working 28+ hours per week.

As such the work hour cap was implemented to prevent work from becoming a distraction for them during their study in Canada.

How will the revised part-time work rights help international students?

With the revised part-time work rule to be implemented in Fall 2024, international students will be able to earn a little more for their living expenses. As the work hours have been raised just by 4 hours as compared to the previous cap of 20 hours, students will also have enough time to focus on their studies.
