Recent research from the British Council and Studyportals shows a significant rise in English-Taught Programs (ETPs) across Europe, positioning the region as a strong alternative to the traditional ‘Big Four’ study destinations: the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. This shift reflects international students' growing desire for diverse educational experiences, leading to a notable expansion of these programs across Europe.
As of June 2024, Europe has become a major player in the ETP landscape, offering 43% on-campus and 58% online English-Taught Programs outside the Big Four countries. The report, Mapping English-Taught Programmes in Europe, highlights how the region attracts students with a wide variety of bachelor's and master's degrees delivered in English.
Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands are leading this growth, each with over 2,000 on-campus ETPs. France, Italy, and Spain follow closely, each offering more than 1,000 programs. Notably, France increased its programs from 1,200 in 2019 to 1,400 in 2024, while Italy saw growth from 960 to 1,250 during the same period.
Cities like Dublin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Cork, and Berlin stand out as key locations for these programs, showcasing the broad geographic spread of opportunities.
The report also highlights a significant increase in online master's programs, with a 67% growth in European-based online degrees in English since 2021. This surge is primarily in master's programs, while bachelor's online ETP offerings are expected to stabilize. German institutions are leading this digital shift, effectively using online education in response to changes in international student mobility policies.
As traditional study destinations impose stricter mobility policies, the rise of online education provides a promising alternative for students. This shift allows European institutions to expand their reach and strengthen their global reputation.
While the demand for English-taught programs continues to grow, some European countries are re-evaluating their offerings. For instance, Denmark has reduced the number of planned ETPs, while the Netherlands is considering cuts to prioritize Dutch-language instruction.
Despite these adjustments, English-Taught Programs in high-demand fields such as Computer Science, Natural Sciences, and Humanities continue to see significant growth. This underscores the importance of English as a key language for education and career opportunities worldwide.
Europe's rise as a hub for English-Taught Programs provides exciting opportunities for international students looking for quality education in diverse settings. As more students seek alternatives to traditional study destinations, European institutions are stepping up to meet this growing demand.
