Germany has emerged as a preferred destination for higher education among Indian students. As per the latest data released by the German Embassy in India, around 25,000 student visa applications have been received from India for the next two semesters. As compared to the previous year, a surge of student visa applications from India is witnessed.
Expressing his thoughts on this record number of visas, Germany’s ambassador to India Philipp Ackerman added that over the years the number of Indian students pursuing higher education in Germany is rapidly increasing. This statement was expressed during a panel discussion at the Acumen Global Gateway Summit on April 20. Furthermore, Philipp stated that at present nearly 35,000 Indian students are studying and living in Germany.
Even though China remains a top country for sending international students, India has joined the bandwagon of sending a significantly high number of students to experience Germany’s higher education ecosystem.
Talking about the rise in number, the ambassador said, free education and English-taught programs have been a major attraction for Indian students.
Considering the rise in visa applications, Philipp Ackerman expressed that the embassy is currently overwhelmed with application numbers. Moreover, fraudulent applications are further slowing down processing. About 5 to 10% of fraudulent applications are witnessed, this will make 25,000 visa applications in a year a challenge for the embassy. Thus, visa proceedings might take some time this year.
To sum up his thoughts, Ambassador Philipp Ackerman expressed that this is a “win-win situation” for Indian students and German society. He also added that “German universities are super happy with Indian students. Their experience with Indian students is extremely positive. Therefore, Indian applications are considered to be very valuable and accepted very easily.’’ |
The increasing popularity of Germany as a study destination can be attributed to its excellent academic infrastructure, world-class education system, and favourable policies for international students. Furthermore, Germany offers a wide range of course options that accommodate the diverse interests and career aspirations of international students.
Moreover, German universities offer an excellent blend of theory and practice, with a strong emphasis on research and innovation. This provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop critical thinking skills, which are highly valued by employers across the globe.
With its reputation for quality education and research opportunities, it is likely that Germany will continue to attract a growing number of Indian students in the coming years.
