Key Highlights

  • Germany, Ireland and Japan are attracting more international students due to their simplified visa processes and growing post-study work opportunities.
  • Germany, Ireland and Japan are also witnessing an increase in Indian student enrollments due to their strong job markets, affordable education and welcoming culture.

The 'Big Four' in higher education – Canada, the UK, the US and Australia – have always been the top choices for international students, especially among Indian students aiming to study abroad. However, new destinations are emerging as study abroad preferences due to the changing country norms.

Shifting Preferences among International Students

Now, countries like Germany, Ireland and Japan are stepping up to attract international students, especially Indians.

Germany saw a nearly 13% rise in international student enrollments between 2021 and 2023. This is because of its affordable education and an 18-month post-study work visa.

Ireland has also experienced a 20% increase in student enrollments during the 2021-22 period. The welcoming culture, cost-effective education system and two-year stay-back option encourages Indian students to study in Ireland. With an employability rate of upto 96% for graduates from popular institutions, the country is solidifying its position as a key player in the overseas education market.

Similarly, Japan has streamlined its education system by offering scholarships like the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), etc. With its aging population, Japan also presents increasing job opportunities for skilled graduates in sectors like tech and manufacturing, which make it a promising destination.

Greater Inclination towards Non-STEM Fields

While STEM courses continue to dominate, students are also exploring new opportunities in non-STEM fields. Countries like Italy and Spain are emerging as hubs for arts, design and business education, offering students the chance to develop specialized skills in creative fields. As industries diversify globally, graduates in fields such as international relations, media studies and psychology are finding exciting career opportunities both abroad and back in India.

In short, the future of international education is diversifying opening up exciting possibilities for international students, especially Indians. For those who are considering to study abroad and want to apply for 2025 intakes, it is important to stay updated on the latest global changes.
