A recent survey from the Institute for International Education (IIE) reveals that international applications to US universities and colleges are continuing to rise, although the growth rate may be slightly slower compared to previous years. The Spring 2024 Snapshot Survey, gathered data from 662 US higher education institutions. This survey highlights trends in international student applications for the 2024/25 academic year and outlines key developments in recruitment efforts.

Growth Trends to Study in USA for International Students

According to the survey, in Spring 2024, 53% US institutions reported an increase in international applications as compared to 61% last year. The best part is that it remains positive across all academic levels, including undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree programs. Notably, associate’s and master’s colleges saw the most significant growth, with 61% and 58% of institutions reporting increase, respectively. However, doctoral universities and special focus institutions reported higher levels of decline.

Strong Growth from West Africa & South Asia

One of the most significant findings from the Snapshot Survey is surge in applications from students in West Africa and South Asia. Ghana saw the largest increase in applications (62%), followed by Nepal (53%), India (47%), Nigeria (46%), Bangladesh (40%), Vietnam (38%) and Pakistan (37%). Applications from China also rose, but at a slower pace (26%).

Despite this growth, visa refusal rates, particularly in countries like Nigeria and Ghana, may affect final enrolment figures.

Continued Investment in International Recruitment by US Institutions

US institutions are maintaining strong financial support for international recruitment, with 85% universities and colleges reporting stable or increased budgets for recruitment efforts. The focus remains on key markets such as India, Vietnam, and China, so international student recruiters from these regions can be rest assured.

For undergraduate recruitment, India and Vietnam are top priorities, with 72% institutions targeting these countries, while China ranks fifth despite being the largest sender of students. Recruitment efforts are also heavily directed toward international students already studying at US high schools, with 87% institutions focusing on this group.

At the graduate level, the focus remains similar, with 66% institutions prioritizing India, followed by China, Vietnam, Nigeria, South Korea, Mexico, and Taiwan. US colleges and universities continue to use a variety of recruitment strategies, such as leveraging international partnerships, alumni networks and social media. In-person events and collaboration with International Recruiters also continue to play a significant role, in attracting students worldwide.

Speaking in a nutshell, these trends highlight the need for study in USA consultants to stay connected with emerging markets and refine recruitment strategies accordingly. This evolving environment offers significant opportunities for collaboration, enabling International Recruiters to provide customized solutions that enhance international student mobility and assist US Institutions in achieving their recruitment objectives.
