Germany’s public universities offer minimal tuition fees, making it an attractive and affordable destination for Indian students. Recent data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany reveals that during the 2023-2024 Winter Semester, 49,483 Indian students were enrolled across various universities in Germany. This growth is part of a larger trend in which the number of Indian students in Germany has more than doubled over the last five years.

Germany’s Rising Popularity Among Indian Students

Germany's rise as a top destination among Indian students is not surprising given the country’s strong academic reputation, especially in STEM fields and the minimal tuition fees. In 2019, there were around 25,000 Indian students in Germany. By 2024, this figure had doubled to nearly 50,000. Comparatively, countries like Canada and the U.K. still have larger numbers of Indian students, but the growth rate in Germany is notable, especially in light of tightening immigration policies in other parts of the world.

Indians preferring German Universities & Institutions of Applied Sciences

Indian students are spread across different types of higher education institutions in Germany. About 56% are enrolled in traditional universities, while 44% attend universities of applied sciences which are known for their focus on practical education and research. These applied sciences institutions are also known for their close ties with both regional and international companies, providing students with ample job opportunities post-graduation.

With a strong focus on applied research, these universities attract students looking for hands-on experience in their fields.

Affordable Education with Minimal Tuition Fees

One of the biggest factors attracting Indian students to study in Germany is the low cost of education. Public universities in Germany typically do not charge tuition fees for both domestic and international students. Students only need to pay a nominal semester fee that covers administrative costs, transportation and student services. This makes Germany a highly attractive option for students seeking quality education without the financial burden seen in other study destinations.

Popular Study Fields among Indian Students in Germany

Engineering continues to be the most popular field of study for Indian students in Germany, with approximately 60% of them enrolled in Engineering Programs. Law, Management and Social Sciences account for 21%, while Mathematics and Natural Sciences account for 13%. The remaining 5% are spread across other subjects. The country’s strong reputation in technical education and industry-academia collaboration makes it a top destination for students aiming to secure a future in chosen fields.

Flexible Working Options for International Students

Apart from all this, the country also offers flexible work opportunities for international students. Those on a study visa are permitted to work up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year without needing approval from the Federal Employment Agency. There are no restrictions on working hours during the semester breaks. All this makes it easier for students to supplement their income and gain valuable work experience while studying.

New Visa Rules for International Students

However, students must be aware of the recent changes in Germany student visa requirements. Starting from September 2024, the amount required as proof of income has been increased from €934 per month to €992. Students will now need to show access to €11,904 per year to secure their visa. In addition to this, they must account for other expenses like living, books, and housing costs.

Despite these changes, Germany remains an appealing option for Indians due to its relatively low living costs compared to other European nations.
