Ireland continues to strengthen its position as a favored destination for higher education abroad, achieving a record breaking 40,400 international enrolments in the 2023-24. This milestone reflects a 15% increase compared to the previous year and marks three consecutive years of growth since 2020.

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) attributes this growth to Ireland’s affordability, strong post-study work opportunities, and welcoming policies, positioning the country as an attractive alternative to traditional destinations like the USA, the UK, Canada, and Australia.

Indians Lead the Surge of International Students in Ireland

For the first time, India surpassed the United States as the largest contributor to Irish higher education, with enrolments soaring by nearly 50% to over 7,000 in 2023/24. This growth comes amid policy changes in other leading destinations, prompting students to explore Ireland’s advantages.

Other significant markets include the US, which saw a rise to 5,655 students (an increase of 11%), and China, with 4,405 students (also up by 11%). Germany recorded a 15% increase, bringing its total to 1,210 students. Meanwhile, nations like Mexico and Türkiye witnessed remarkable growth, further diversifying the student community in Ireland.

Rising Interest from Europe

While India leads the way, other regions also contributed to Ireland’s enrolment growth. European students, including those from Germany, Poland, and Romania, are increasingly choosing to study in Ireland. Emerging markets like Mexico and Türkiye also saw significant growth, with student numbers rising by 61% and 53%, respectively.

Popular Fields of Study

Postgraduate programs saw exceptional growth, with enrolments rising by 24%, compared to an 8% increase in undergraduate numbers. STEM courses remain a top draw for international students, particularly ICT programs, which recorded a 65% increase in enrolments. Health, Business, Engineering, and Arts Fields also continue to attract students, aligning with Ireland’s growing demand for skilled professionals in its thriving tech and healthcare sectors.
