One of the world’s most respected and widely accepted English-language proficiency tests, TOEFL will undergo several new changes in the year 2023. Keep reading to find out more about these updates as they will help you during your test preparation for TOEFL.
ETS has announced a series of enhancements in the TOEFL iBT test to provide an optimal experience for test takers. The changes will be implemented gradually over the next few months, beginning on July 26, 2023.
The most significant change is the shortening of the test, which will now take less than two hours to complete. The previous test duration was of three hours. This revised test duration makes TOEFL iBT the shortest of the three most popular English-language tests.
This reduction in test time is achieved through a shorter Reading section which will consist of only two reading passages with 10 questions asked for each passage and the removal of all unscored test questions. In addition, the previous Independent Writing task will be replaced with a more concise and modern writing task sectioned as "Writing for an Academic Discussion". Furthermore, the test will have streamlined instructions and navigation.
Another exciting update is the simplified registration process that will be available starting in July 2023. Test takers will be able to create an account and register for an available TOEFL iBT test date more easily. In addition to this, local payment options will be available in select markets, with plans to expand these options over time. Thus, Indian test takers will have the option to pay the test fees in INR as well.
Additionally, the TOEFL iBT will give increased score transparency. Thus test takers will now be able to see their official score release date upon completion of the test. Also, test takers will receive real-time notifications of changes to their score status.

Seeing the new changes in the test, test takers who have previously registered for the TOEFL iBT test will now have the option to reschedule their test date to experience these new enhancements or they can also move up their test dates.
These are the new enhancements in TOEFL iBT which will be effective from 26th July 2023. While there are many changes happening, some of the test guidelines will remain the same.
