New Zealand has issued an important reminder for international students planning to study in the country in 2025 to apply for their student visas as early as possible. The peak visa processing period from October to February is approaching. As such the New Zealand government is urging students to submit their applications at least three months before their expected start date. Early submission is vital to avoid delays due to the anticipated surge in applications during this time.

For students aiming to begin their studies in early 2025, applying well in advance increases their chances of receiving a timely decision. The current processing time for New Zealand student visa applications is around five weeks as of August 2024.

Impact of Early Application & Relevant Documentation

Late applications run the risk of not being processed in time for students to commence their studies. As such the New Zealand government is recommending international students to apply well in advance. However, some students may not be able to apply three months in advance due to pending study documentation. In such cases, it is recommended to apply as soon as the necessary documents are received.

In addition, New Zealand Immigration has also announced that due to the anticipated high volume of applications during the peak season, they will not be able to contact applicants for missing documentation. Any incomplete applications may result in a visa denial. To avoid this, students must ensure all required documents are submitted when applying.

Adding to the urgency, the New Zealand Government announced on August 9, 2024, that visa fees and levies will increase starting October 1, 2024. This makes early application not only a matter of avoiding delays but also potentially saving on visa costs.
