New Zealand Student Visa Fees to Increase from 1st October 2024

The New Zealand government is going to increase visa fees for almost all categories, including student visas. As per the Immigration officer of the country, Erica Stanford, these changes are intended to create a more sustainable immigration system.

Effective from 1^st October 2024, the New Zealand student visa fee will see a substantial rise, doubling from NZD 375 to NZD 750. Despite the increase, New Zealand's revised fee remains relatively low as compared to Australia, where the student visa fee now stands at AUD 1,600 (NZD 1,750).

In the wake of this announcement, the Immigration Minister stated, "Until now, our immigration system has been heavily subsidized by taxpayers. The changes we are making are shifting the cost to those benefiting from the system. We are ensuring it is self-funding and more efficient," 

Further, she added, "The new charges reflect the costs associated with visa processing, assessing and managing more high-risk applications, and increased compliance costs. However, the charges remain competitive in comparison to countries like Australia and the United Kingdom, so we are confident New Zealand will continue to be an attractive destination to live, work, study and visit."
