Indian Government Raises Concern on Study Visa Fee Hike with Australia

Dec 13, 2024

Key Highlights:

  • India is working closely with Australia to address the visa fee hike and its potential financial implications.
  • The 125% increase in Australia’s study visa fee, effective July 2024, has raised concerns among students.
  • Both countries emphasize strengthening their education partnership to support academic aspirations.

The Indian government is actively engaging with Australian authorities to address concerns regarding the hike in student visa fees. Effective July 1, 2024, the Australian student visa fee has been raised for international students from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600, marking a steep 125% increase.

Australia’s revised measures are designed to ensure that only genuine students gain admission, aligning with its goals to maintain high-quality education standards and support economic growth. But this move has led to financial apprehensions for many aspiring students, including a significant number from India.

Proactive Steps by Indian Authorities

India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Kirti Vardhan Singh, confirmed that the issue has been formally discussed with Australia. During a recent session in the Rajya Sabha, he highlighted that the fee hike could pose financial challenges for students aiming to study in Australia. He added that the ministry is continuously following up with Australian counterparts to address these concerns and ensure a smooth experience for Indian students seeking higher education opportunities in Australia.

“The hike in visa fee is expected to pose financial challenges to international students, including those from India,” said Singh.

The India-Australia Education Partnership

Despite the challenges posed by the fee increase, the education partnership between India and Australia has remained strong since December 2022. Indian students constitute the second-largest group of international students in Australia, with over 160,000 enrolments recorded in the year ending August 2024.

Under the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), several measures are in place to benefit Indian students as listed below.

  • Post-Study Work Rights: Up to five years for PG and up to four years for UG for STEM and ICT fields
  • Youth Mobility Programs: Cultural exchanges and work opportunities for young Indians.
  • Mutual Recognition of Qualifications: A framework easing professional mobility across key sectors.

These initiatives reflect the commitment of both nations to fostering academic, cultural, and economic ties.

Opportunities Amid Challenges

The visa fee hike coincides with a reported drop in overall student visa applications, but Indian students can expect a positive outcome based on the talks initiated by the Indian Government. Till then they can explore multiple pathways like overseas education loans, scholarships and government support programs to offset financial pressures.
